What to ask a tutor in a demo class

A demo class is your chance to see how a tutor teaches, not only what they know. Go in with a few questions and watch how your child responds.

Before the class

Tell the tutor your child's class, board, the chapters they find hard, and the next exam date. A good tutor will plan the demo around that rather than give a general lesson.

Questions to ask

How will you find out where my child is weak? How often will you test them, and how will I hear about progress? What happens when a class is missed or needs to move? How much homework do you give? Have you taught this board and class recently?

What to watch for

Does the tutor ask your child questions, or only talk? Do they check understanding before moving on? Is your child comfortable asking a question? Afterwards, ask your child how it felt - their comfort matters as much as the tutor's qualifications.

After the class

Compare two or three tutors if you can. Agree the timing, fee, number of classes a month and the cancellation rule in writing before you start, so nobody is surprised later.

Frequently asked questions

Is the demo class free?

Many tutors on VidyaHouse offer a free demo; the profile says whether they do. Confirm with the tutor before the class.

How long should a demo class be?

Long enough for the tutor to teach one small topic and check that your child understood it - usually thirty to sixty minutes.

Should I sit in on the demo?

For a young child, yes, at least for part of it. For an older student, let them attend alone and ask them about it afterwards; many speak more freely without a parent in the room.
