How to choose a maths tutor
Maths is the subject most families look for help with, and the one where the right tutor makes the clearest difference. Here is what to look for.
Board and class experience
CBSE, ICSE and state board maths cover similar ground in different order and depth. A tutor who has recently taught your child's board and class knows the textbook, the exam pattern and the chapters students usually find hard.
How they handle mistakes
Good maths tutors treat a wrong answer as information: they find the step that went wrong and fix that, rather than re-explaining the whole chapter. Ask how they find a student's weak areas.
Practice, not only explanation
Maths is learnt by solving. A tutor should give regular practice, check it, and test under time limits as exams approach. Ask how much practice they set and how they check it.
What matters less than it seems
A very senior qualification is not always better for a Class 7 student; patience and clear explanation usually matter more. Likewise a tutor who solves fast is not necessarily one who explains well.
Frequently asked questions
When should my child start maths tuition?
When marks fall, when homework causes regular struggle, or a few months before a board exam. Starting before the gap widens is easier than catching up later.
How many maths classes a week are enough?
Two or three a week suits most students in Class 6 to 10; more as board exams or entrance tests approach. Regular practice between classes matters as much as the number of classes.
Can I find a maths tutor for JEE foundation?
Yes. Search by subject and class, and check the tutor's profile for JEE or Olympiad experience.
